What Kind of Place Is This, Exactly
Playground sits in the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawà:ke, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive south of downtown Montreal. It opened its doors in 2010 and over time turned into one of the serious poker hubs in Canada - not just in reputation, but in actual scale. The poker room runs around the clock, every day of the year, and depending on who you talk to, there are somewhere between 61 and 75 poker tables in operation. For a single venue, that is a lot of live poker.
The complex itself takes up about 128,000 square feet. Poker is the core, but not the only thing going on. You will also see blackjack tables, roulette, baccarat, plus a full area with electronic gaming devices (EGDs - basically slot-style machines and similar terminals). If you need a break from the felt, The Rail Coal Fire Bistro is on site, so you can grab food without leaving the property.

Getting a Seat - The Waiting List
Before you jump in the car, it helps to understand how you actually get a seat. On busy evenings, just walking in and hoping to land immediately in a specific game can be unrealistic. The waiting list exists exactly to deal with this, and using it properly means you are wasting less time milling around in the lobby.
You can put your name on the list in advance in two different ways.
One method is through the Poker Atlas app, which you can install on both iOS and Android phones. Inside the app, search for Playground in the venue list, then choose the game type and stakes you want. From there you add your name from your phone, and you can watch your spot move up or down the queue while you are still at home. If you are driving out from Montreal and want to avoid sitting around, this is genuinely handy.
The second option works by text message. You send your Player ID, your full name, and the limits you are hoping to play to 514-616-5176, up to one hour before you plan to get there. After that, wait for a confirmation text, and then show up within the time window they give you so your place in line does not lapse. In both cases you still need to physically check in with the floor staff at the poker desk once you walk into the room.
You can also just show up and register in person at the desk. This is fine on slower days, but when it is busy, the list often has a decent backlog by the time you walk in. If you are thinking about going on a Friday or Saturday night, or during a major tournament series, adding yourself via the app or by text is usually the smarter move.
If live poker rooms are new for you, arriving a little early and taking five minutes to quietly watch how the floor works is not a bad idea. You see where players line up, how the seats are called, where chips are bought. It is not complicated, but it feels less abrupt than stepping in and trying to figure everything out at once.
The Poker Room Itself
Cash games and tournaments go on non-stop. Playground has hosted official stops for the World Poker Tour, so it is on the global live poker map rather than just being a local hangout. For players who keep track of stats and past events, both Hendon Mob and the Global Poker Index maintain venue profiles with historical results from series that ran here.
Promotions such as high hand jackpots are posted in the poker section of the official site at playground.ca/poker, with details changing from time to time. Exact amounts, how long the promos run, and what hands qualify are all updated there, so checking in before each visit is the practical thing to do. Social channels are used as well: Twitter/X (@PlaygroundPoker) and Instagram (@playgroundpoker) often mention upcoming series, schedule tweaks, and promo reminders. If you expect to visit regularly, those feeds are worth keeping an eye on.
Floor staff can walk you through the different poker formats, table minimums, and the way tournament structures are set up if you ask. The room is set up to be comfortable for newer players as well as regulars; in real terms this means you are not expected to be an expert on every rule or format before you sit down. Asking a couple of basic questions at the desk is normal.
